A heterogeneous database environment is one in which the company's data is stored on different servers using different database products. For example a company may have inventory data stored on Microsoft SQL Server, accounting information on Oracle, customer information on IBM, and technical support information on Microsoft Access. Finally the company needs to communicate with vendors using some specific EDI document.
