e-Business Development
E-Business is about using the Internet to maximize reach, return on investment, and marketing efforts. Using Internet technologies a company can quickly enable their data to reach customers, suppliers, and business partners around the county and around the world. A company can even continue to use its current data systems, therefore using the advantages of the Internet to communicate with customers, suppliers, and business partners without changing current data systems.
E-Business is generally broken down into three areas: Extranets, Intranets, and e-Commerce web sites. All use Internet based technologies, and all are viewed with a web browser.
Extranet – is a network of controlled access web resources, belonging to a company and its suppliers and vendors. The resources are available over the common public Internet. Access is secured and password protected. An extranet can tie together companies, suppliers and partners all over the globe. An extranet may be used for order processing, payment collection, data entry, proposals, bid requests, or to provide documents. Another business-to-business communication in place today is Electronic Data Interchange (EDI). Every day more Extranets are being developed to replace EDI because Extranets use the familiar, web interface and allow for greater flexibility.
Intranet – is the same as an extranet look, feel and feature-wise except that the web resources are contained with the company. There are no connections to suppliers, or partners and electronic information is not carried over public communication lines.
E-Commerce – is selling goods and services on the Internet. An e-commerce site is targeted to customers and is characterized by an easy to use, attractive web interface. With proper protection an e-commerce site can be connected to either a company's extranet or intranet.
